Disaster Relief
Topsail Island, NC - September, 1996
UPDATE: Since this article was written in September of 1996, the residents and businesses of Topsail Island have been busy rebuilding their properties. Today, Topsail Island is completely rebuilt and once again a busy, prosperous and thriving community.
Topsail Island, North Carolina, was totally devastated by
Hurricane Fran in early September, and authorities have been
extremely cautious in making arrangements for rescue personnel
to work on the island. Because of the total devastation, and the lack of
power and water on the island, their concern was for the personal safety
of the rescue personnel involved.
As well as pets left behind when owners evacuated, there was
also a managed feral cat colony on the island. CFA's Disaster
Relief team will be heading to this area on Wednesday,
September 11th and will be setting up a shelter and 40 feeding
stations. On Monday, September 16th, they will begin trapping
those cats they cannot "lay hands on".
Cats will be trapped, tested, vaccinated, altered and
released. CFA will cover this expense and also the cost of
supplies, vet expenses, etc. The IAMS Company has generously
agreed to donate food for the shelter, etc. Food donations will be
given to those caring for the colony.
