    CFA Disaster Relief: 1997

Red River Area, ND - April

The eastern portion of North Dakota has been devasted by the flood waters of the swollen Red River. The CFA Disaster Relief Chairperson and our Midwest Regional Director were on the scene during the last week of April, evaluating the situation for further assistance. There are a large number of animals to be rescued, but about 70% of these are "owner known" and, once rescued, they will be reunited with their owners. The Red River flows north into Canada, and the southern portion of the province of Manitoba is now starting to flood as well.

    Arkadelphia, AR - February/March

Arkadelphia, AR was hit extremely hard by raging tornadoes and the situation in that area is quite sad. Our Disaster Relief Committee Chairperson is currently waiting for a call from the Pulaski County Humane Society to see if they need additional help in trapping cats who survived the tornadoes. Of course, the cats are quite traumatized and only come out at night. She is ready to be on site with Hav-A-Heart traps if called to be of assistance.

    Ohio River Floods - March

Flooding in the southern Ohio and northern Kentucky areas has been widespread and devastating. Currently, one humane society has requested kitty litter, and arrangements have been made with a litter company to get some to them. Local volunteers have done a fantastic job in contacting shelters affected by flooding (as has the person who teaches our disaster training at the annuals). One shelter has had to relocate to higher ground. Bluegrass Cat Club will be loaning them cages for their temporary shelter. Local media has also been contacted to put out the word that we can rescue animals (small) and to call if assistance is needed. The IAMS Company has donated food. It appears the worst is over, and the water is receding. We are now watching communities down river for possible flooding.

    Trinity River Flooding - March

We were in Liberty, TX a year and a half ago when the Trinity River flooded and it's done it again. Our Disaster Relief Committee is waiting for a return call from the Liberty Humane Officer (the shelter flooded last time) to see if we need to return and assist in the rescue of small animals.

If the locale in which you live is in need of disaster relief assistance, please send email to disaster-relief-request@cfa.org
